Turkey's higher education splits into two tracks. Understanding the difference is the first step toward the right application.
PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
State-funded, lower tuition, admission through the centralised TR-YÖS or SAT exams. Programs in Turkish and English. Highly competitive for popular fields like medicine and engineering.
FOUNDATION UNIVERSITIES
Privately funded, faster admission process, most programs taught in English. Scholarship opportunities for strong applicants. Some offer bilingual programs — for example, dentistry in both English and Turkish.

Exams, explained
TR-YÖS
UndergraduateThe centralised foreign student exam, run by ÖSYM twice a year. Tests mathematics, geometry, and academic aptitude. One score is accepted at most public universities and valid for about two years.
SAT
UndergraduateAdministered by the US College Board and accepted at many Turkish universities as an alternative to TR-YÖS. Also tests English proficiency, which can strengthen applications to English-taught programs.
ALES / GRE
GraduateALES is ÖSYM's graduate entrance exam (Turkish only). Most universities let international students submit GRE instead, and some waive the requirement entirely — it depends on the program.

Do I need to speak Turkish to study in Turkey?
Not necessarily. Many programs — especially at foundation universities — are taught entirely in English. Some universities offer a preparatory Turkish year if your program requires it.
How much does tuition cost?
It varies widely by university and program. Public universities are significantly cheaper than foundation ones. We'll give you accurate figures for your specific targets during a free consultation.
Can I work while studying?
International students can apply for a work permit after their first year. Conditions and permitted hours depend on your program and university — we'll walk you through the process.
Will my degree be recognised back home?
Turkey's Bologna Process membership means degrees are structured for broad recognition. For Iran, you'll need to complete a denklik (equivalence) process — we help with that too.
Does studying count toward citizenship?
Student residence time partially counts: every two years of study equals roughly one year toward the five-year citizenship requirement. Many students transition to work residence after graduation to continue the clock.
